Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority Bringing Back Summer Tours
Tours provide an opportunity to see The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor and learn of future redevelopment plans.
Bayonne, June 2, 2006 – The Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) is pleased to announce the return of its popular summer tour series at The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor.
Tours of the former Military Ocean Terminal (MOTBY) are offered to all members of the community throughout the summer months. Beginning June 20 the tours will continue, twice a week, throughout the summer. The tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the day, between 10am and 6:30pm. Interested participants must call the BLRA to register for a time slot in advance.
“Our tours have been highly successful,” said Nancy A. Kist, Executive Director, BLRA. “In prior years we’ve had more than 300 residents participate in the tour series. We hope to accommodate more participants this year.”
The hour-long tours include an historical timeline of the site from its days as an Army base to its current role in uses, including film production, the completed environmental cleanup, and other on-going site work to implement the redevelopment plans.
Tour participants will get to see where passengers board Royal Caribbean cruise ships at Cape Liberty Cruise Port. They will also see the dry dock operated by Bayonne Dry Dock, one of the largest dry docks on the eastern seaboard, along with the northeastern corner of the site where Harbor View Park and the 100-foot monument “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism” are being constructed adjacent to waterfront views of lower Manhattan and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
“This is a very exciting time for The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor and an exciting time for the citizens of Bayonne. We invite the community to be a part of the future of The Peninsula and by offering tours we enable the public to follow us on our journey to redevelopment,” said Mayor Joseph V. Doria, Jr.
The man-made peninsula, at 430-acres, juts more than two miles into Upper New York Harbor and is the largest tract of undeveloped land in the New York /New Jersey metro area.
Redevelopment of The Peninsula is organized around the creation of six different, yet integrated districts: Harbor Station, which will consist of mid-rise housing, office space, commercial space and civic facilities; Bayonne Bay, which will feature low-and mid-rise housing with views of the South Cove and an adjacent golf course; The Landing, which will have a water transit docking facility surrounded by a commercial and entertainment area with shops, stores and restaurants as well as a residential section with mid-rise housing; The Loft District, which will be converted to hip loft-style housing units adjacent to the ferry landing with views of lower New York Harbor, the Verrazano Bridge and golf course; Bayonne Point, which will feature a cruise port, marinas for private boats to dock, seaside entertainment, cultural and retail venues and high-rise residential and office buildings, and a park with panoramic views of the harbor; and The Maritime Industrial District, which will be transformed into a state-of-the-art deep-sea port with a design that is expected to rival the world’s leading ports.
Seating is limited – those interested in taking a tour must first register. Individuals will meet in front of Bayonne City Hall, 630 Ave C to board the van. The van will return to City Hall following the tour, approximately an hour later.
