Bayonne, NJ – May 19, 2006 – A dozen Russian artisans will arrive this weekend to begin assembly of the 100-foot 9/11 memorial entitled “To the Struggle Against World Terrorism.” The monument, which arrived in six pieces last August, will be the centerpiece of Harbor View Park at The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor.

The monument was designed by renowned Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli and is a gift from the Russian people and Tseretelli. Often referred to as the ‘teardrop’ memorial, the granite base of the monument will contain the names of those who died on 9/11 as well as those who perished in the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. The monument will be placed in the northeast corner of The Peninsula in the center of the two-acre park facing the World Trade Center.

In addition to the monument, the landscaped park will feature walkways and spectacular views of New York Harbor and Manhattan.

“We eagerly await the addition of this memorial park to the City of Bayonne and to The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor,” said Mayor Joseph V. Doria, Jr. “We are grateful to the Russian government for giving our city this great monument to honor and remember the victims of the September 11th and 1993 attacks on the World Trade Center.”

The Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) awarded the park’s construction to J.A. Alexander, Inc. To finance the construction of Harbor View Park, the BLRA received a Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund Grant in the amount of $500,000. Moreover, Royal Caribbean whose passenger facility and parking lot run adjacent to the park will contribute an additional $300,000.

“Harbor View Park and the 9/11 memorial will be the perfect complement to the redevelopment plans for The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor,” said Nancy A. Kist, Executive Director, BLRA.

Harbor View Park is scheduled to open by Sept. 11, 2006, the five-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center.
