Cape Liberty Cruise Port on The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor had another banner year in 2007 scoring high marks worldwide for customer service.

In its fourth season of operation, Cape Liberty was the Northeast region's second busiest port, hosting 60 cruise ship calls and serving more than 277,000 passengers during the 2007 season, which ran from May to December.

Looking back at the 2007 season in Bayonne, the port hosted inaugural ceremonies for Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas, one of the world's largest cruise ships, as well as the first season ever cruising from Bayonne by Azamara Cruises and their ship, the Journey.

Throughout the year, Cape Liberty served as homeport to one of the world's most majestic vessels, Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas and Celebrity Cruises' elegant Constellation also sailed regularly from Bayonne.

Last year, Cape Liberty also had its first port of call vessels, with the Alexander von Humbolt and Fred Olsen Tours' Black Watch.

In addition, Cape Liberty undertook interior and exterior renovations to its passenger terminal building and pier to make customers even more comfortable sailing from Bayonne. "The significant work we accomplished in 2007 has enabled us to expand Cape Liberty's schedule to accommodate year-round sailing to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean," said Port Director Anthony Caputo. "In addition to meticulous customer service, we continue to provide new and exciting ways to meet the travel needs of our passengers."

Bayonne Mayor Terrence Malloy hailed the year as "another banner year for Cape Liberty and the City of Bayonne."

"Since its inaugural season four years ago, Cape Liberty has focused the world's attention on the City of Bayonne," he said. "Our prime location, spectacular views of Manhattan and welcoming community all combine to make Cape Liberty one of the nation's most sought-after cruise terminals."

Cape Liberty Cruise Port is an integral part of the multi-billion dollar redevelopment plan for The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, which includes six distinct districts across 430 acres of a former US Army military base. When completed, The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor will consist of mid-rise and loft-style housing, retail and park space, ferry service to Manhattan, commercial and entertainment areas, as well as its commercial port.

Joseph Nichols, interim executive director of the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority, predicted that year-round sailing from Cape Liberty would boost passenger volume higher for 2008.

"Right now, we're expecting more than 300,000 passengers to travel from the Cape Liberty Cruise Port this year," he said. "That's a significant increase over 2007 and it will further spotlight the attractiveness of the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor and the City of Bayonne."
