Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority Receives Award For Its Commitment To Safety
The Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) was recognized recently for its commitment to safety from the Statewide Insurance Fund.
A plaque for the Safety and Loss Control Award was presented to BLRA Deputy Director Marie Boyle by the Statewide Insurance Fund Chairman Robert Cutter during the Fund’s annual reorganization event held at the Bernard’s Inn in Bernardsville, New Jersey.
“It is extremely gratifying to be honored by the Statewide Insurance Fund for our dedication to safety,” said BLRA Executive Director Nancy Kist, Esq. “The redevelopment work that is under way at The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor requires skilled workers and much attention to detail. Safety plays such a vital role in that work, and we strive to make sure workers on our site have the best working conditions possible.”
The Statewide Insurance Fund was created in 1994 to address the insurance crisis that public entities were facing. Insurance coverage was becoming too restrictive and insurance premiums were escalating out of control. Today, the fund has 70 members throughout the State and provides property, liability and workers’ compensation coverage to its members. The BLRA has been a member of this group since 2003.
“The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor is going to become such a vibrant, new addition to our City, and we want to make sure any projects at the site are safe and secure,” said Bayonne Mayor Joseph V. Doria Jr. “Safety is an important factor at the Peninsula, and this award proves that we take it very seriously.”
“The goal of the Fund is to provide comprehensive insurance coverage and safety and risk management programs designed specifically for New Jersey public entities at stable cost,” Cutter said. “In order to achieve this goal, members of the Fund must be committed to safety as claim costs are the biggest expense to the Fund. By achieving this goal, taxpayers benefit. Thank you Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority for your commitment.”
About The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor Since the U.S. Army transferred complete ownership of the former military base in 2002, the BLRA has raised more than $50 million in government grants and interim lease payments to make infrastructure improvements needed to attract development. These improvements include new bulkheads along the south side and environmental remediation that was completed in 2005, ahead of schedule. Other projects include the installation of a new sewer system, a new electrical grid and new roads.
Redevelopment of The Peninsula is organized around the creation of six different, yet integrated districts. In 2004, Cape Liberty Cruise Port opened, marking the first tangible step in the transformation of the 430-acre site. It resulted in 51 cruise ship calls in its first season and created 300 jobs.
In 2006 the BLRA approved plans for development of another district, Harbor Station North, which will consist of mid-rise housing, retail space, and park space adjacent to the 45th Street light rail station. The approval of redeveloper agreements for portions of Bayonne Bay begins the transformation of the third district into a vibrant mixed-use waterfront community. Conditional agreements with other developers for portions of the Landing and Loft Districts signify progress in other districts as well. The Landing will have a water transit docking facility surrounded by a commercial and entertainment area and mid-rise housing, while the Loft District will be converted to hip loft-style housing units adjacent to the ferry landing with spectacular views of New York.
